The Feynman Technique: Find What You Don’t Understand

The Feynman technique rests on a single premise: if you can't explain a topic in simple words, you don't actually understand it. The method asks you to write it out as if explaining it to a child — every point where you get stuck shows you exactly where the gap in your understanding is.

Four Steps

  1. Pick a topic and write its name at the top of a blank page. For example, "Photosynthesis" or "Derivatives."
  2. Explain it without looking at your notes. Write in plain sentences, as if explaining it to someone who's never heard of it. If you use a technical term, explain that too.
  3. Mark where you got stuck. Every point where you paused mid-sentence, or wrote something vague like "it's basically...", is a gap in your knowledge. These are your real weak spots.
  4. Go back to your source and fill only those gaps. Don't re-study the whole topic — study only the part you got stuck on, then return to step 2.

Why It Beats Re-Reading Notes

Re-reading notes creates a sense of recognition: you see the text and think "yes, I know this." But recognizing something isn't the same as recalling it. On the exam, you won't be shown the text — you'll be shown a question.

The Feynman technique forces you to produce the answer instead. Rebuilding information in your own words pushes your brain to retrieve it rather than just recognize it — which is active recall in its purest form.

Example: "What Is a Derivative?"

Weak explanation: "A derivative is the rate of change of a function. It's written as f'(x)."

Feynman-style explanation: "Picture a graph of a car's distance over time. When the graph gets steeper, the car is speeding up. A derivative is literally what measures that steepness: it tells you how fast the graph is climbing at any given moment. So the derivative = the speed at that instant."

The second version has no memorized terminology — just an understood relationship. When the exam rephrases the question, the person who memorized the first explanation gets stuck; the person with the second one keeps going.
