OBP (Secondary School Achievement Score) is your high-school diploma grade multiplied by 5, giving a value between 250 and 500. It's added to your placement score with a 0.12 coefficient — meaning the gap between the lowest and highest possible OBP is about 30 points.
How Is OBP Calculated?
Since diploma grades are out of 100, OBP's theoretical floor is 250 (a 50 diploma grade) and its ceiling is 500 (a 100 diploma grade). You can work out your own OBP in seconds with an OBP calculator.
Its Contribution to Placement Score
| OBP | Contribution | Gap From the Lowest OBP |
|---|---|---|
| 250 | 30.00 | — |
| 350 | 42.00 | +12 |
| 425 | 51.00 | +21 |
| 500 | 60.00 | +30 |
In other words, a candidate with a 100 diploma grade starts roughly 30 points ahead of one with a 50 diploma grade. That's meaningful in terms of ranking, but it's not decisive on its own.
How Much Do 30 Points Actually Matter?
Worth putting into perspective. In the Quantitative track, 1 net is roughly worth 2.5-4 score points depending on how hard that year's exam was. By that measure, a 30-point OBP gap is roughly equivalent to 8-12 net answers.
That's a real amount, but it's not unrecoverable. A student with a low diploma grade can close the gap by raising their net score by around 10 points. On the flip side, a high OBP alone never gets anyone into a program by itself.
What to Do If Your Diploma Grade Is Low
Once you've graduated, your diploma grade — and therefore your OBP — is fixed. The only thing left to do is put your energy in the right place:
- If you're still in high school: Your course grades directly affect your OBP. Not neglecting your grades in 11th and 12th grade especially is a gain you can make without taking anything away from your exam prep.
- If you've already graduated: Forget about OBP and focus entirely on your net score. Worrying about it won't change your score — it'll just take time away from studying.
Note: OBP coefficients are set by ÖSYM and can change from year to year. Check the official guide for the relevant year before making your choices.
Frequently Asked Questions
Since the diploma grade is out of 100 and multiplied by 5, OBP can be at most 500. That gives a maximum contribution of 60 points to your placement score.
OBP is calculated from your diploma grade using the same formula regardless of school type. Whatever your diploma grade is, your OBP is exactly five times that.
As long as your diploma grade stays the same, your OBP doesn’t change. The coefficient that determines its contribution to your placement score, however, is set by ÖSYM and can change year to year.
